About Us
Hi! I’m Liz.
Purple Mountain Quilt Shop had it’s grand opening on October 11, 2008. That was Standing Stone Day, the yearly founding day celebration of our town, Monterey. It was also the day of a new beginning for our town with the return of the excursion train which brought over 500 folks to our sleepy little town on top of the mountain. It was my dream to be part of the renewal of Monterey but honestly, I never thought it would happen.
Barbara, one of the associates, and I have been friends for many years. Our friendship became as tight as twisted thread through the process of learning to quilt while living in Florida. We learned to make a quillow in our class and loved it so much that we had the “hair-brained” idea that we could start our own business selling quillows at local art fairs. Ha! That was a joke, but we had more fun and shared many wistful hours dreaming about what it would be like to own our own shop. The dream was born!
My husband and I moved to Tennessee in 2001, but had been visiting Monterey for eight years prior. I immediately thought how awesome it would be to have a quilt shop in this quaint little town. My profession, however, is teaching and that consumed most of my time once we finally moved to the plateau. On March 25. 2008, my husband passed away. I found my escape from the trauma through quilting. On the way to a local quilt shop I thought, “Maybe now I should open my quilt shop”. Somehow, seven months later, we were cutting the purple ribbon for our grand opening. It has been an adventure full of friends and good times. I invite you to come and join us and get to meet me, Liz, in person.
